Why settle for one destination when you can see so much more? Take your love on the road and plan a road trip honeymoon! From coast to coast, and everywhere in between, you’ll find points of interest ranging from national parks to sandy beaches, and bustling cities to quaint villages. This budget-friendly adventure lends itself to spontaneity and savoring every moment together.

“A road trip is a great option for couples on a restrictive budget that want to stay in the United States,” said Nicole Czechowski, Leisure and Luxury Travel Specialist, The Travel Team. “Couples that like to plan and explore, and have ample time off, are also well-suited to road trips.”

Nicole recommends setting aside 10 to 14 days for a memorable road trip honeymoon. This will give you plenty of time for sightseeing and experiencing each leg of your journey, and the occasional diversion from your path.

Ease on Down the East Coast

From Portland to Palm Beach, your adventure down the East Coast can include historical highlights and casual coastal dinners in quaint villages. Start your journey in cozy New England and make your way south, either along the coast for beachy scenes or inland along the Mississippi for beautiful view of bayous and historic plantations. If you’re looking for more action, stop in New York, Washington or Miami.

Meander Through the Majestic Midwest

The Midwest is home to some of our nation’s most awe-inspiring national parks, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Wisconsin; Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota; and Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Arkansas. These parks offer glimpses of picturesque prairies and beautiful lakeshores and rivers. The Midwest is also home to one of the world’s premier paddling destinations, Boundary Waters. If you travel further west and south, you’ll find yourself in canyon land. Here you can explore the majestic canyons and sand formations of Utah, Arizona and Texas.

Wind Your Way Down the Wondrous West Coast

A trip along the West Coast offers sipping in northern California’s wine country and savoring the beauty of Oregon. Mix in the rugged terrain of National Olympic Park, Washington, or the stark landscape of Joshua Tree, California, and you’ll find that there’s something for everyone along the west coast. Travelling south along US Route 1, you can travel the iconic Pacific Coast Highway with stops in Santa Monica, San Francisco and Santa Cruz, or linger on the beaches of southern California.

Road Trip Tips

Here’s some advice from Nicole to keep in mind when you’re planning your honeymoon road trip:

  • Pre-plan a route with the main sites you wish to visit, but leave some space on your itinerary for off-route adventures.
  • Hotels or accommodations in national parks should be pre-booked due to limited space and high demand.
  • Summer months coincide with tornado season so look at extended weather and storm forecasts.
  • Bring a map in case you lose GPS signal on your phone.

Calculate realistic “drive time” between points with adequate time for sightseeing at each destination.
