Cakes have been part of wedding celebrations for hundreds of years. Today’s couples are opting for more unique sweet treats that fit their personal preferences. For summer weddings, pies make a delicious alternative to the traditional wedding cake.
1. Sturdy
Cake is a delicate dessert option and it’s especially vulnerable to summer heat. Many varieties of pie, on the other hand, can stand up to warm temperatures. This makes it easier for your caterer or bakery to set up your dessert table before your reception, rather than moving the cake for cutting after dinner.
2. Flexible
Pies come in a lot of different forms. No matter how you want to serve dessert at your reception, pie will work! For individual servings, go with mini pies, hand pies baked onto sticks (like cake pops) or fruit filling topped with pie crust in mason jars. Finish your family-style meal with a pie (or two) and a stack of plates in the middle of each table.
To mimic a wedding cake, have your baker stack pies of varying sizes to create a tiered look. Or, have a “cutting” pie with a decorative crust on display, with slab pies cut in the kitchen and served to guests.
Cobblers and tarts, pie’s less-fussy cousins, are also delicious summertime dessert options for a casual or backyard wedding.
3. Flavorful
From refreshing lime to locally-grown peach, there are dozens of summertime flavors for your wedding pies. These are a few of our favorite:
